May 2007

I frequently walk through an undeveloped tract of land near my house that borders two golf courses. I routinely see wildlife here including mule deer, coyotes, marmots, owls, black crows and hawks. One of my most amazing spiritual experiences to date happened with a coyote to this backdrop. I had seen coyotes here before, but before I started meditating and raising my awareness, it was just the experience of seeing a wild animal. That all changed last year.

Coyote

While walking through a valley, I noticed a feeling in the back of my neck. Someone or something was watching me. I had never had noticed this feeling before, but I had heard about it and I immediately knew what it was. I turned around and on a ridge behind and above me was a coyote standing there and watching me.

At the time this happened, I did not really understand the mechanism that causes some people to be aware of when someone is watching them. But now… imagine you are at a party, and someone across the room behind your back is watching. You turn around and you are right, someone is watching you. How could you sense this?

Well, there are really two components to this example at this hypothetical party. Everyone there is emitting an energy signature… that extends many feet beyond their body, up to maybe 32 feet. If you were able to control your energy, pull that energy in, so that it did not interact with anyone else’s energy field, you would not “feel” like you. People would sense something strange going on with you. Like a part of you was missing. So, at the party, all the energy fields are interacting. When the person watching you, focuses on you, they also feel your energy field, a sort of sixth sense, you might say. Their consciousness decodes everything about you, how you look, how you are standing, how you “feel” energetically. Then people who are not trained to keep their energy fields to themselves re-transmit the “feeling” of you. You recognize this fiber or “feeling” of you in someone else’s signature and it creates that feeling in the back of you neck.

A week after being watched by a coyote, I was walking very near to the same place, down a ridge toward the next valley. I felt the same coyote watching me again from one ridge over. I was very relaxed mentally. I was just feeling the sun on my face, listening to my footfalls, smelling the wildflowers in bloom. Very near to a state of meditation. As this coyote watched me and tuned into my energy, I unintentionally tuned into her energy. I had been practicing the skill of assimilation earlier.

As we locked eyes, my awareness leapt from my body to inside the body of the coyote. I could now see myself walking along slightly downhill on the next ridge. My eyesight was very acute. Better than human. I don’t remember interpreting colors differently but I was astounded at how well I could see myself from so far away. I now began to explore what the rest of this coyotes senses were like. I could feel four legs with paws, arranged a bit differently than human legs. My back felt unusual, like the mechanical supports were engineered differently. Then I noticed the feeling of fur on my skin. And how hot the sun felt on my fur. I shifted my awareness again to the sense of smell. It was overwhelming. There was so much data I couldn’t really take it all in. And it was tightly coupled to taste, more so than in humans.

Then as quickly as it started, my awareness jumped back into my own body, and I was still walking down the hill. I silently thanked the Universe for sharing with me and walked back home, profoundly moved and forever changed.

I had a new dream experience this week. I dreamed I “saw” a friend of mine. This friend and I have first met a Higher Balance retreat in Portland, Oregon almost two years ago. At our first meeting, we talked about lots of spiritual topics; awakening, finding God, using the sixth sense, etc. I was instantly drawn him; like we had known each other in a past life. Since then we have had a on and off psychic connection. And my friend has also played a role in my own work on ego and identifying when I am affected by the emotions of others.

I dreamed I was looking for someone to go mountain biking with me and I walked into a room in my house and “saw” my friend. The scene played out a little differently in my head. It’s like I felt the presence of my friend and then my brain projected the image of the way he appeared last time we met. Before I had a chance to talk I got this psychic blast from him. It contained a lot of data but I was really only able to catch the emotional tones. It was similar to the feeling of “oh great, not another person, I just finished with one person.” Along with that was the feelings of anger, frustration, feeling overwhelmed, and “I can’t do this right now.”

So I slowly retreated and closed the door in my dream. As soon as I woke up, I wrote down as much as I could remember in my journal. I had a feeling that consciousness of my friend had connected with my consciousness during my dream state and I didn’t want to forget. The story didn’t become that interesting until I emailed my friend and asked if he had any interesting dreams lately.

My friend and I have connected during dreams before. But in the past he had remembered the dreams and I had not. Since then I have connected with three other people and I have learned information that I otherwise would not have known. So I now know these connections are possible.

It turns out that someone who knows us both was chatting with my friend right before he went home from work and he asked about my friend about connecting with me during dreams. He asked how is this possible. My friend said that he can pinpoint the time where this question set his mind in motion and unlocked the door for me. My friend also said that I pretty much exactly summed up how he had been feeling and that he had been working late that night on remotely healing someone and that took a lot of energy from him.

I am beginning to think that the important part of dreams is the feelings and information, not the objects or people we think we see. I believe the objects and people are “projections” that our brain put over the tops of what is really going on.

Dreams serve two purposes that I am aware of. One is helping us deal with issues in our lives. But more importantly, dreams are the mechanism that Gaia, the planetary consciousness, uses to collect our daily experiences. Our sense organs send information through our nerves to our brain so we can experience the world around us. Every night when we dream we send our experiences to Gaia so Gaia can experience the world. You could say people are the sense organs for the planet. We provide the input that causes Gaia to learn, to grow, to evolve.
